Questions, answered
What people ask before they build with us in Camrose County, on the ICF side and on the carpentry side.
01 / Common questions
Before you build with us
01 Do you do the carpentry and the ICF work, or just one?
Both. Woodwright provides general contracting, custom carpentry and SuperForm ICF construction. We can discuss the foundation, structure and finishing as part of your overall project, with clear responsibilities, schedules and communication.
02 Does ICF make sense for central Alberta winters?
It is one of the strongest cases for it. An ICF wall has continuous foam on both faces of a solid concrete core, so there are no studs conducting cold through the wall and no cavity for wind to find. Homes we build this way hold their temperature through a January cold snap and stay cool in a July heat wave. The concrete core also gives you a basement that does not move with the frost.
03 What does an ICF foundation or wall cost compared to wood or a poured wall?
Material and labour for an ICF wall usually run higher than a bare poured or framed wall, because the ICF wall arrives insulated, formed and ready for finishes in one step. Once you add insulation, framing, vapour barrier and the extra site days to the conventional wall, the gap narrows, and the heating bills afterward favour ICF every year the building stands. Send us your plans and we will price both ways for your project.
04 What kinds of projects do you build with SuperForm ICF?
Basements and walkout foundations for new homes, full ICF homes, shops and garages, and commercial buildings. ICF also suits additions where you want the new part of the house to be quieter and warmer than the old.
05 How long does an ICF foundation take?
Stacking and bracing a typical house foundation takes a few days, the pour is a single day, and the walls are ready for backfill and framing once the concrete has cured. Because the insulation is already in place, the following trades start sooner than they would on a bare concrete wall.
06 Do I need anything special for permits or engineering?
ICF is a recognized building system under the Alberta Building Code and inspectors in Camrose County see it regularly. Reinforcing and concrete are specified for your wall height and soil conditions, and we handle the drawings and the inspection schedule as part of the job.
07 Can you put in-floor heat in the basement or shop?
Yes. We install SuperPex hydronic floor panels, which hold the PEX tubing in place without stapling and insulate under the slab at the same time. An ICF shop with a heated floor is a comfortable place to work in February.
08 Do you take on renovations and small carpentry jobs, or only new builds?
We take on both. Trim and millwork, custom railings, doors, feature walls, cabinetry, and full renovations are the work Woodwright was built on. A staircase railing gets the same attention as a whole house.
09 Where do you work?
We are based near Camrose, Alberta, and work in Camrose and the surrounding communities across central Alberta. If you are unsure whether your site is in range, call and ask.
10 How do we get started?
Give Woodwright a call or send an email to begin the client onboarding process. Bring the plans, sketches or ideas you have, along with your questions. We will discuss your project and work through the next steps, removing the mystery and delivering clarity.
